Post-Cast Hypertrichosis in Patients Undergoing Cast Application for Bone Fractures: A case-series
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Hypertrichosis refers to the excessive and abnormal growth of hair of vellus, independent of the effects of androgen. Since acquired local hypertrichosis can be unilaterally detected in the casted limb, it causes asymmetry and problems with beauty. Therefore, evaluation of the risk factors of developing after casting is necessary in order to alleviate the concerns of patients, timely treatment as well as possible preventive measures. Case presentation: In this case series, 7 patients admitted to orthopedic department of Rasoul Akram Hospital in 1398 who had been developed post-casting hypertrichosis are studied. Demographic and clinical data of patients (age, sex, history of surgery of the affected limb, number and duration of previous castings, severity and location of the trauma) were collected using a checklist. Data were analyzed by SPSS 24 software. Finding revealed that prevalence of hypertrichosis is slightly higher in women (approximately 85%) and in a younger age group, mostly young adolescents. No significant difference was found between the variables and prevalence of hypertrichosis.

Localized acquired hypertrichosis following cast application.
A 11-year-old boy with transient hypertrichosis following calcaneal osteotomy and cast application for 2 months is described. We postulate that hyperemia may be responsible for his hypertrichosis, which lasted 3 months and created a cosmetic problem.
full textIntroducing an Invention: Puzzle Shaped Cast for Upper Limb Fractures
Upper limb fractures are prevalent injuries. An essential element of fracture healing is to maintain the bones alignment. However there are lots of complications associated with traditional ways of treatment, such as compartment syndrome and stiffness due to immobility for long time. Also evaluation and observation of the limb under the casts for potential infections and skin issues are n...
full textBile cast syndrome: Diagnosis and management, a case series
Background and study aims Bile cast syndrome (BCS) is a complication of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). It occurs in 4 % to 18 % of OLT recipients and can present as cholangitis and graft damage or loss. Twenty-two percent of patients with BCS require repeat OLT. The diagnosis and management of BCS can be challenging. Our aim is to share our experience with BCS and to briefly review the...

Hypertrichosis refers to increased vellus hair growth and is independent to androgen excess. The acquired localized hypertrichosis (ALH) is one of the typical hypertrichosis, which mainly results from chronic irritation, inflammation, friction, and occlusion by plaster of Paris. Here, we report a young boy who had ALH on his right hand following a closed fracture with internal fixation and plas...
full textTitanium Elastic Nails Versus Spica Cast in Pediatric Femoral Shaft Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of 1012 Patients
Background: There is a general consensus on the management of femoral fractures in children younger than two years and adolescents older than sixteen years. The best treatment for patients younger than sixteen years of age is still debatable. Titanium Elastic Nails (TEN), is widely used with some evidence, nonetheless, we undertook a systematic meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of TEN comp...
